I Love You, SYB Babes

Hi ladies,
I don't know how to say it. I guess I should just jump into it, since my keyboard is soaked with tears and my laptop will probably die in seconds. Next Tuesday, I will begin a full-time position as Beauty Director at Essence.com. Which means I'm also shutting down "Shake Your Beauty."

I know. I know. Believe me, it hurts me more than it hurts you. I feel like we're best friends. Sisters, even. Play cousins. You and I have been through five and a half years of love, laughter, marriages, babies, bad perms, migraines, Revlon Raisin Glaze Lipgloss, Q&A Wednesdays, a zillion posts about Tarte Cheek Stain and, and...well, LIFE. You don't know this, but you've gotten me through some really hard times. For three of our fives years together, I was going through a series of emotionally and physically traumatic IVF procedures. They kept failing and failing, and there were some really bleak times. YOU kept me smiling. Your comments, your emails...even all the drama over the Saks dress during AMBI-gate. Thank you. Girls, when I started SYB, I had no idea it would become so successful. I barely even knew what a blog was; all I knew was that I'd just left my post as Teen People's beauty director and wasn't ready to stop talking beauty. You helped me turn it into something that really mattered. We did it together! We rock!

How quickly my mood turned from despondent to rah-rah! I'm PMSing.

Recently, my life has taken some rather major turns...which I decided meant that the universe was telling me to switch some things up. This Essence.com position couldn't have come into my life at a more perfect time! I've always adored the magazine, the site, and Emil Wilbekin, Essence.com's irresistibly debonair managing editor (you also know him as the former Editor-in-Chief of Vibe and Giant). His vision for the site was so positively delicious and sexy that I was dying to be involved. Girls, as bittersweet as it is, I'm over-the-moon, hell-and-gone excited to begin this new chapter in my career. I really am. And I'm not moving to Siberia! Please, please follow me over to Essence.com! I have some really exciting stuff planned for the beauty and hair channels. Essence's digital staff is incredible, so I can do fun things I'd never have been able to pull off here (mainly because I thought the "ht" in "html" meant hot tamale).

Thank you so much for supporting SYB over the years, dear readers. You made it so fun for me. I'll always love you (especially the regulars...you know who you are). And even though the blog as we know it will be no longer, I'll send you updates here and there just so you know what's going on with me. And La Lina!

Here's what I know: You will ALWAYS be my SYB Babes. I don't care what other blogs you're into, or even if you never catch on to my orange blush thing. You'll always be my girls! Got that? Good. Now have a glorious Thanksgiving. I know what I'm thankful for!

Kisses, kisses, and mo' kisses,

Your Tia

Oh Tia, I've been lurking forever! I came across your blog when I was Googling my own name (I know, loser vibes). But I fell in love with your blog at the very first glance. You were the very first blog I bookmarked.

I went from being a girl who combed her hair once a week and walked around with ashy lips, to that girl getting Dominican blow-outs, Exibit A cheeks and glowing sun-kissed skin! I still cannot manage to find raisin glaze in Canada though!

Oh and when I found Lauren's Stereohyped... Lawd, did I think I was part of your cyber family! But now, you're leaving me, just like Lauren did (sad Tia (my) face).

I wish you the best of luck at Essence. I can't wait to check you out there. All the best to you, and Sunshine, and little La Lina, and your entire familia who had your back during Ambi-Gate.

All of us SYB Babes had your back too and we'll miss you!

I have been an avid reader of your blog for years now. I don't often post, but I couldn't stop my fingers from typing after I read this. I'm so happy for your new position, I will indeed join reading the Essence blog just to see what you have to say. On the other hand I'm so sad to see SYB go. This is the only blog I read, your beauty advise is the only advise I take. You guide us brown gals in the right direction and never have lead us astray. I weep, I moan, I sigh. Please don't leave without telling us what beauty products 2010 have in store :)

Oh Tia, I got through college on this blog! I started reading it freshman year and bonded with fellow SYB babes on campus - oddly enough, we all had similar make up collections. I hope that Essence is wonderful to you. You are a magazine gem (and an inspiration to us aspiring magazine/writer girls) and I thank you for all your wonderful words of beauty wisdom.

My Dearest Tia -- My "BFF in my Head,"

I don't know if I'm more sad that SYB will be gone & out of my life forever (let's hope forever really means temporarily) or if I'm just selfishly devastated that we didn't cross paths at Essence.com.

I found your blog after reading [one of my favorite books] "Accidental Diva" years ago and I've been a proud SYB Babe ever since. Like an SYB Babe above me said, this blog was a gift from Heaven in college! What a girl crush I had on SYB. A new post from you made my heart skip a beat!

I'm sad to see it go, but I'm very, very happy for you and your new position, which is very much deserved. Essence.com is blessed to have such a talent on their team and we'll be over there to cheer you on!

Much love Tia and much much success. I wish you & your family nothing but endless happiness. Thank you for such an AMAZING blog over the years.

omg....It's so hard to say goodbyeee. I remember picking up "Accidental Diva" off the shelves of the library absolutely loving it then googling the your name (had never done that before) and found this site and I've been in love every since. Your blog made me smile during a tough pregnancy and now three years later I still can log on pull up your blog and smile. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and always providing options for us us brown girls on a budget to be fly too! Love ya Tia!~Malca J

p.s. please explain to them over at Essence the whole "beauty on a budget" concept cuz they be trippin sometimes lmao!

Tia,

I didn't realize just how much I loved your blog until your heartfelt goodbye! I almost got teary! Geez Louise, I thought, it's just a blog! But I don't think it really was just a blog. It was a source of inspiration and support to see a kick ass black woman in her third decade doing her thing with a beautiful family and sharing so much of her life with us all. I wish you a lot of success at Essence and with La Lina. I hope we get to see more pics of her! Take care! Smooches!

Good luck w/everything. Please fix the new Essence site - what happened to it? Its hard to read and looks like a blog. Please bring your creative aesthetic juices and help them out over there.

OMG! I don't check your blog for couple of days and now I find out you're leaving?!? :( Because of you, I've been introduced to Philosophy's Marinating Oil and the wonderful fictional worlds of Billie Burke and the It Chicks. Le sigh... Thank you for all your inspiration, beauty tips and tricks and general fabulosity! I can't wait to see the fabulousness that you'll bring to Essence!

Wishing you, Mr. Cabezas, and the adorable La Lina nothing but the best,
A*E*

Awwww man! This blog will definitely be missed. You allowed us to become your cyber girlfriends and put me on to some of my faves. If you keep doing what you do and doing it well, I guess it doesn't matter where ya do it. See ya on the Essence pages :) I'll be the chick begging for last minute tips for my wedding day in January
