An alternative to Flintstones...
Hi girls,
It's been a beauty editor secret for years, girls, and I'm exposing it, here and now. Since the dawn of man, non-pregnant beauty editors have been taking pre-natal vitamins like GNC Women's Prenatal Vitamin with Iron ($8) to help strengthen their hair and nails. Now, I've always thought this was kind of an old wives tale--and just plain weird, to be honest--but since I'm seven months pregnant and enjoying the BEST hair and LONGEST, STRONGEST nails I've ever had in my life, I'm thinking there may be something to this whole thing. Seriously, my hair has never been this thick and lustrous...and my usually flaky, super-weak nails have been beyond-tough lately. It's worth a try, right? And besides, boosting your vitamin intake certainly can't hurt. Go forth, experiment, and report back with results!
xoxo
Tia

They do help your hair and nails o grow. I won't even scare you with what happens afterwards....*sigh*
1969..you got to tell us what happens next;-)
I went to a health seminar and the dermatologist did recommend women take these vitamins even if they're not pregnant. I do have my bottle, but I've not been disciplined enough to take them daily. My hair has always been thick and my nails are naturally long and hard as well, so I would take it for the nutritional benefits.
1969...Don't do to them.lol!!Because I KNOW what happens afterwards too.:)
What happens???
What happens after?? I've been taking them since high school. I have very thick hair and nails...not sure if it's because of the vitamins but I always figured it didn't hurt.
Sorry I have to tell them... After you have a baby... Wait for it... Your hair falls out :-( I have a lot of thick curly girl hair (My hair is like the owner of Curve/Miss Jessie's Titi) and I thought "Not ME!" Yes me... Around 16 weeks I lost hair in my temples, it came out in handful clumps... it grows back. My hair was SO beautiful when I was pregnant and right after my first Dominican blow out was unreal... Then it all fell out :-P
I saw something that said there is a hormone or something your body produces extra during pregnancy that makes your hair so much thicker and longer....anyways yes my hair also fell out after having my son, i just went ahead and chopped it all off (no baldy or anything)
The increased hair volume that many women experience during pregnancy is generally attributable to hormonal changes, not prenatal vitamins. However, if you are low on B vitamins, iron, or other nutrients that affect hair growth, then you may experience some benefits from taking prenatal vitamins, which have more of these nutrients than regular vitamins generally do.
During pregnancy, your increased estrogen and progesterone levels prevent your hair from going into tellogen phase, which is when your hair sheds. Normally, some of your hair is always in this phase, so preventing this phase naturally leads to less shedding and thicker hair. Unfortunately for your hair, after pregnancy your hormones return to normal, and alllll that extra hair falls out.
Well,if I'm just taking the vitamins for the beauty aspect I don't mind about the hair falling out after pregnancy because I don't plan on having a baby ANY time soon! This is good to know, I think I'll pick up a bottle tomorrow.
Thank you for the clarification, NKatz. I was about to break it down, but you did it.
You don't necessarily have to take prenatal vitamins to get strong hair and nails-GNC, the brand Tia has here, has a formula designed for women that has very high levels of Biotin in them, which strengthens hair and nails.
Yep...I had this gorgeous thick amazing hair. Never in my life kinda hair when I was preggers with the twins. But it fell out, all in the front, in the top.
I ended cutting it all off too and going natural for a couple of years.
BUT, I will say this. I still take them for health reasons. I'm anemic and they seem to have higher levels of iron in them sothey great for that.ALSO, I tell any pregnant woman that will listen:
Your pregnancy is your pregnancy. It will differ from your mother's, your sister's, your girlfriend's. So filter the advice and stories you hear carefully because everything might happen to you.
I mean "might NOT happen to you"
lol!
I used to take them as well, but I found that I would eat like I was eating for two...and I wasn't preggers...lol Did anyone else get an increase in there appetite while talking the pills???
I am still nursing (baby is 7 months) so I am still taking my vitamins when I remember :-P If I cut my hair when it fell out I would have had a cesear LOL! I just parted it in the middle and slicked it down, low ponytail. It is growing back so the pony is on top of my head again...
I hear you, Jamie. Prenatals are probably working so well for you because they are more readily absorbed by the body. They're also prescribed for the elderly for this reason.
And Tia-your hair was glorious before :)
So here's the thing I did the whole prenatal vitamin thing for awhile, and my hair was luscious and all, but I gained like 15 lbs. I blame it on the fact that I was taking prenatal vitamins while on the pill, which girls is not the best thing to do. Chunkiness galore, so now i'm off the prenantal vits and on Biotin and MSM...and it works wonders, my dominican hairdresser is amazed by how long my hair is getting in such a short period of time.
Yippee!I always recommend vitamins for hair growth! It's the best ever!
My best friend is a family practice doctor and said this about prenatal vitamins for unpregnant women: It's actually a reasonable thing to do. We often recommend women to start them even if they think they want to become pregnant soon, it helps build up folic acid to prevent neural tube defects in the baby. If there is no baby, you just get your daily vitamins (with a little less Vit C than in regular vitamins) along with strong hair and nails (bonus). The only problem with prenatal vitamins for the nonpregnant woman is that it has a lot more of everything than you need. More iron is one example, and more iron often translates into constipation for many people. That's the only drawback I see. They are only slightly more expensive than regular daily vitamins which we should all be taking anyway so it's worth a try. Be patient though, takes a few weeks to notice any difference. On second thought, why not just buy the vitamins for hair, skin and nails? It has the biotin and vitamins that helps with hair growth and all but won't leave you straining on the stool because of the iron.
Queen w/o a crown: What does MSM stand for?
I've taken the women's gnc ulramega vitamin and my hair did really well with it. I've taken regular prenatals from walmart and my hair grew did grow faster and longer. Keep in mind you have to wait at least 3 months to see the vitamin is completely worked into your system. I'm also experimenting with hair vitamins from nioxin and that is working. flax seed oil is also good to take for keeping your scalp moisturized and your skin glowing.
