Yes I can!!

Hey girls,
OBAMAOBAMAOBAMA! I mean, can you stand it? And did you see Michelle? She looked stunning in her violet sheath...and someone talked her out of that flip! I'm so in love with them. I'm "yes, we can"-ing all over my neighborhood. So inspired. And in the inspirational spirit of "yes, we can," I decided to do something I RARELY do. It's been awhile since my last hoo-ha wax appointment, and I really needed a touch up. So, last night, I took matters into my own hands! Many of you have asked me what I think about at-home bikini wax kits, and I have to say, the BEST on the market is Sally Hansen Wax Strip Kit Brow/Face/Bikini ($6.59). Sooo easy to use and totally mess-free. The kit comes with a bunch of different sized wax strips encased in paper. You simply cut a strip down to the right size for your "little girl," and then warm up the strip between your hands. Peel off the paper backing, slap it on the troublesome area, and rip it off! Works every time...even on those pesky little hairs that are like, half-in, half-out. I'm not going to say it's pain-free, because there are no lies on SYB, but it's easy and cheap, which goes a long way. Oh, and it comes with a special Azulene Finishing Oil that removes residue and conditions your skin to death. Happy waxing!

Meanwhile, I'm off to L.A. for the Hollywood Black Film Festival! The amazing beauty brand Ambi is sponsoring a "Black Women in Film" screening and after-party, and they actually asked me to host the party! I'm dying. There's a speech involved, and red carpets, and Spike Lee...I'm shaking in my gladiator flats. But you know I'll be back next week to give you all the deets!!
xoxo,
Tia

Tia,
I tried waxing my bikini line with another product and it was the worse experience. After the first few painful yankings of the hair, I stopped and didn't want to do anymore but left the wax all over. When I did get my courage back, the wax had cooled off and I couldn't get all of it off. So many tears and little drops of blood!!! To make matters worse, the next day I had bumps which looked extremely UGLY. Who wants to go swimming like that? How do you keep the bumps from coming? or was it just because of my crazy process?

Are you yes we can-ing all over your neighborhood because Obama is the best candidate or because he is a black man? If it is because he is a black man then I am offended by your post. Race or gender is not a factor in who will make the best leader of our nation. As a white women I am supporting Obama because I think he will be the best leader. Using your logic I should be on the Clinton bandwagon. I am a long time reader of your blog and I really hope that I have misunderstood your post and you are not implying that you are celebrating Obama's delegate victory based on the color of his skin.

Let me first say that I am a black woman and as a black woman, I am offended by your post. No where in Tia's post did she mention Obama's race so why did you? Is it because she is black? I am so tired of the media playing up black's people's support of Obama as just because he is black. For one, black people have long been Democrats before this race and most will continue to be after it, as long as the Republican party continues to support its policies. I for one,was torn between Clinton and Obama at the beginning of the race but after witnessing Clinton's "it's me or no one attitude," as well as noticing other issues, I decided to support Obama. Much of my support comes from his desire to change the status quo of Washington politics and work together as a nation despite political parties. If he was white, I would feel the same. Yes it makes me proud that he is black, but I'm not supporting him because of it. I'm not saying that there aren't any black people out here who support Obama just because he's black, because there are. But there are just as many that support Clinton because she is white, and will now support McCain. THAT is what I call racist. Anyway, I never comment on here, but I couldn't ignore your comment. Also, if you truly support Obama and the change he represents, maybe you should do some soul searching to see whether or not YOU have a problem with his race.

*BOOOOO* to anonymous...moving on...OMG I am SO SCARED to do at home waxing, but you've given me courage, Tia! Oh yeah-- I remember you blogging about the Neutrogena Acne Mark Fading Peel a WHILE back, and I can say that after about two weeks of use (2-3 applications per week, on average), OMG i can ACTUALLY SEE my acne marks fading! not only that, but NO NEW BREAKOUTS!!I haven't seen my face this clear since '92...when i was FOUR. LOL.

I also had my first run-in with a Dominican Salon. I'm in the DC area, and i went to one in Silver Spring, MD. I'm Black, and my hair is au-natural. I was VERY dissapointed. :( Is there any releif in sight for no relaxers, hot combs, or flat irons?? Or maybe i just need to try a different salon. Dominican-salon frequenters, what's your consensus??

Dear Anonymous,

I am offended that you would assume that Tia is yes-we-can-ing all over her neighborhood just because Obama is Black. I mean, she didn't even hint at that as the reason for her support in her post. Why would you assume that? Just because Tia is Black as well?

What is it about summer time on your blog that makes people get all crazy?!?! Remember the Harlem Book Fair "Staffer"? People need to get out of the son and drink some water, pronto!

Big ups to you for being able to wax yourself. I can't even tweeze my own brows because I can't inflict pain on myself.

So excited for your upcoming event! I hope you have fun (take pics!) and pick up a lot of beauty tips from those West Coast hotties that manage to keep their makeup from melting in that million-degree heat.

Let me get this straight. Black people (and really, everyone in the country who believes in equality) are not allowed to rejoice over the historical nature of Obama's victory in addition to that fact that he will be a great leader? Thanks for letting us know that after voting for white presidential candidates since we have been allowed to vote, black people can't get hype when a qualified, exciting, inspiring man who also happens to be black breaks through the glass ceiling.

I don't know what "logic" Tia expressed in the post that gave you the idea that she was advocating that people only vote along racial lines. Frankly, the only logic I don't understand here is yours.

Tia, YES YOU CAN "yes you can" all over your neighborhood. And you won't be alone.

So as a white woman you have to ability to see that he is the best candidate. But since Tia is black she's not capable and just sees color....hmmmm.

Sounds like you need to check yourself....and also you owe Tia an apology for insulting her intelligence.

Wow, anonymous #1, really REALLY do some self-reflection about this. There's a lot of baggage in your comment that you seem to be unaware of. Lauren and teeluv said everything I'd say aside from that.

Also: try YonKa Juvenil serum for preventing post-waxing irritation.

I applaud you for doing your own wax. I tried it years ago and it just hurt too much! lol!

I am so sorry about anonymous. But you keep doing your thing. Can you recommend a product to wake up your face? I am up all night and look so tired in the mornings.

Sorry, I tried these Sally wax strips on my upper lip and bikini line. As for the upper lip, I must have really sensitive skin b/c the wax ripped some of it away and left me w/some scabbing. I barely left it on for two seconds! On the bikini line, it ripped out maybe every OTHER hair and the pain was too much I just wouldn't dare go over the area again. I've had my upper lip waxed in salons and it was quick, relatively painless, and all my skin stayed on my face...only the hair was gone. I think it's worth the $$. BUT if you're skin is tough enough and you have a high tolerance for pain, these wax strips are really convenient, inexpensive, and relatively clean.

Happy waxing in 2008!!

I've found the Nads waxing strips REALLY painless and gentle! I was surprised that it hurt so little...I don't think its worth it for legs, as a box costs around $20 and only does half my legs...but the face strips are worth it...

I may have to try this sally hansen for the bikini...I've had 3 bikini waxes...the first one hurt like hell (I was asking the poor lady to stop, and shrieking like a kid in a doctors office!) the second one I got a month later...hardly any pain at all...the 3rd appointment was 3 months later....and it hurt like the first time...so I learnt my lesson, I can't go that long between waxes! That is why I'm keen to do it myself.

Anonymous #1 was verbally slapped and I LOVE it!!! How dare you accuse the owner of this blog of being happy b/c a politically experienced Democrat who is African American won the nomination. Even if race factored into Tia's decision, does it matter? Where is your indignation at all of the Hillary Clinton supporters who loudly proclaimed that they were voting for her because she was a woman? Please don't act offended that in the U.S. race and gender DOES matter. How dare you chide Ms. Williams for being happy that the candidate she voted for clinched the nomination! Further, white folks, black folks, yellow folks, brown folks, and red folks have been voting for WHITE men for years. Very often, many of our white American brothers and sisters were proud to state that they voted because presidential candidates were white, educated, wealthy, and male. Graffiti someone else's blog with your rant. Ugh!!!

Thanks for the waxing tip. I had my first one last month and like the results, which have been pretty long-lasting. I may try this myself and if I don't like it, I'll just go back to getting it done by a professionalzw.

ELLA here again (posted earlier about the NADS)...I went out and bought this Sally Hansen kit and tried it on some strays in my bikini area - it was not good at all...it took out every 5th hair or something....so am still on the lookout for a good bikini wax...

Ella here again....with a brazilian waxing update...after trying several products - I've found one that really works - its a hot wax with no strips - I thought it would be more painful - but it honestly hardly hurts!

I would recommend going once to a professional - having a wax done there so you can get the technique...and then just do touch-ups every two weeks at home..

Here is the wax (I got mine at CVS)...Andrea Naturals Brazilian Bikini Wax Blueberry Banana 4oz

it comes with pre and post treatment oils...the pre-treatment oil prevents the wax from sticking to your skin
