Ambi Love!

Hi girls,
I'm back from the Hollywood Black Film Festival in Beverly Hills! It was fun, fun, fun! On Saturday night, AMBI Skincare sponsored the "Black Women in Film" screening and after-party...and they asked me to help host the events. There was a red carpet, and AMAZING short films, and Loretta Devine! And I got a saucy little cocktail dress (12th Street by Cynthia Vincent, and it's going back to Saks tomorrow). It was such an honor to be asked to participate, girls. Yes, I had a blast, but my excitement was slightly overshadowed by Adam's. My unassuming husband ended up having the quintessential LA experience. A., he was offered a Xanax by a harried businessman on our flight, and B., a porn director approached him at the after-party and asked him if he ever thought about exposing his Latin Lover on film. I'm still giggling...

Okay, so AMBI stocked our hotel room with all of their greatest hits, and both Adam and I fell hard for Ambi Soft & Even Body Care Creamy Oil Lotion ($8). Ooohhhh. It has all the super-moisturizing loveliness of a body oil, but it's in lotion form, so it's not greasy or weird. And your skin stays supple and ash-free for TWENTY-FOUR HOURS. Really great to keep in the bathroom for your and your hombre, since the scent is charmingly un-gender-specific...and once you get him hooked, you won't have to worry about him flashing those crusty knees and toes all summer.

xoxo,
Tia

I've been a big fan of the site for a while, but find this post and Tia's participation in this Ambi event hypocritical and such bad judgment on her part.

For those of you who do not remember, Tia has bashed Ambi on this blog before. On 3/19/2006 Tia wrote:

"But I found something that helps fade the scars, finally! Forget cocoa butter and Ambi, those old wives tales of yore."

Read the entire post here:

Tia, honey, you've got to be consistent or you'll undermine your credibility.

I agree with Anon at 10:19 a.m.

I have cut down on visiting this site b/c there are so few posts from Tia about products that she loves that are NOT sent to her directly by a beauty publicist.

Also, I know people do buy and return clothes after events, especially if the adult does not have the money or the teen's parents can't afford it. But why the need to tell us your spending/returning habits in a post?

I know there will be a dozen or so comments who will bash my and Anon's comments, but they know there is some kernel of truth in our statements.

I love this blog, and I think you're great-
however, you have reached a measure of success that makes me wonder how on earth you think it is remotely cool to post that you want to return a dress that you have clearly USED? It's your choice, but it sounds realllly tacky at this stage in your life. I understand that designers lend clothes to celebrities all of the time, but clearly this is not the case. Returning a dress worn once doesn't keep you "real" it just makes you look dishonest.

Dear Anonymous Squared and Disappointed,

Wow. Where to start. Regarding my previous post about Ambi, I was referring to the fading cream...which has never worked for me. Today's post was about their new lotion, which I'm in love with. AMBI actually relaunched their brand, and the company got in touch with me to host the event because I'd expressed my excitement over the new products. Just so you know.

And in regards to the other Anonymous who thinks I usually only post about products publicists send me...well, that just shows a lack of understanding of the beauty industry. As a former beauty editor and creator of a successful beauty blog, I'm sent zillions of products a week. Any time a new product launches, it's sent to me. If I reviewed a product simply because a publicist sent it to me, I wouldn't have time to eat, breathe, or watch So You Think You Can Dance. I write about stuff I love, and that I think you guys will love...no more, no less. I don't get paid for this blog. I do it because I actually am a beauty authority, and any way I can help you guys makes me happy.

About the dress? Yep, not a millionaire. I'm returning it and not ashamed.

xoxo,

Wow, people are a little angry on here...I think its possible to now like a product without hating the entire brand. Maybe the ambi fade cream sucks but the lotion is great. I know i like the clean and clear deep action cleanser but that doesnt mean i would recommend the entire clean and clear line or every line under the johnson and johnson brand which makes clean and clear, ambi, aveeno, etc...

Hi,

I chimed in this morning about Tia's previous Ambi post. I work in PR (nothing to do with beauty, however), and I understand that you are sent products to review. I'm fine with that. However, your claim that you are not paid to write this blog is a bit disingenuous.

The blog has undoubtedly brought revenue opportunities your way. You have become a beauty influencer. As a young, attractive black woman with a similar audience, Ambi is smart to partner with you. And while I'm sure this new Ambi lotion is great, I have no doubt that you were paid to host the party, and that most if not all of your travel expenses were also paid by Ambi. With that comes the implication, while not officially, that you will make positive endorsements about the brand moving forward.

Look, this is Shake Your Beauty, not The Wall Street Journal. It's well written and fun, which is how we all got to this place. I'll continue to read it. I find it useful to navigate the big world of beauty products.

That said, it's important that consumers who do not work in this industry know what is really going on. We all work hard for our money, so it's just something to keep in mind before you make that beauty splurge.

You look goregeous as usual. And that revamped Ambi lotion sounds heavenly.

I too was not a fan of their other products (fade cream? no thanks) but this cream oil sounds interesting. Thanks for giving us your take on it.

As for being tacky in New York....LOL. Come on folks, it's not that deep. Lighten up.

Tia...if your blog brings in revenue and free products....so be it. It's your space and you are the brand. I read it to get product reviews, beauty info and for entertainment. Not to harp about how you get the products you choose to review.

Keep doing you.

I am a consistant reader of this blog and think that everyone should keep in mind that it is a BLOG, not a news source or such. The opinions that Tia expresses are just that, opinions. She should feel free to express them as you are free not to read this blog!
As for taking back the dress...well, I prefer that she keeps it real rather than fake it like she got it...real life is just that, real!

The Ambi Fade Cream does indeed SUCK! The fact that you looked into it so much as to even post a link to the past post...WHOA Not that Serious. It is ok to not like a certain product from a brand, and then find another product that you actually like. I must admit that I thought revealing the details about returning the dress was in poor taste But my goodness the Honesty is so very refreshing!!! Really. I love it, and I love this blog! I hate to see a bunch of people to afraid to reveal themselves, come and bash it!!!

So to all the anonymous rants, you can take my unbiased opinion and do whatever you want with it. Last I checked, I haven't gotten a check from Ambi nor all the other products that junk up our apartment!

Confucius said "Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life", and he was so correct. If you can get paid to write about beauty, go for it! As for returning the dress-I don't think you should just because you look great in it. Just eat cereal for the rest of the week like I do when I buy some crap I don't need (hello, iPhone!).

On another note: can you tell us which shadow you're rockin in the pick? It's glamorous and understated at the same time.

Anonymous Publicist,
You know, I usually don't like to get into it with my readers, but I truly think you've crossed a line. You don't know me, you don't know the details of my weekend with Ambi (unpaid, by the way), and you know nothing about my product reviewing process. It's inappropriate for you to come into MY space and state your uninformed opinions as fact. The refreshing part of being a blogger instead of an editor as that I'm NOT indebted to advertisers or publicists...I write about what I feel like writing about. Zero politics. If you're offended by SYB, I suggest you stop reading it. Leaving snide, unfounded comments attacking the credibility I've worked ten years for is just plain ugly.
Thanks,

I was going to defend Tia by saying perhaps she was lent the dress and meant she would be returning it to the stylist who gave it to her. At this level of success you've achieved, I wouldn't advertise that in public.

Tia,
Thank you for responding to "anonymous" if only to validate your genuine devotion to the quest for beauty products that work. I love, and thoroughly enjoy reading this blog but I have to confess that when I read the section of the post regarding the Ambi product I did a mental skip over. My initial thought was that you were hawking this product because it was the best of the line Ambi was pushing in LA. I didn't hold this against you (I could pen my own blog on all of the products that I've happily purchased just because "Tia said so")I just cynically assumed your review was a necessary evil that comes with the territory of your business so in short I basically ignored your review of it. And therein lies the problem...had you not responded to the poster I would've just moved along and not even given the Ambi lotion a 2nd thought. All I'm sayin' is that I was born, bred and raised in Bklyn, delete at least 2 dozen spam emails a day, all the while insisting daily that I don't need "yet another credit card"...the natural inclination can sometimes lean towards feeling as though everyone is trying to sell you something....
Regarding your dress, I'm still cracking up, you are BRAVE. I would be looking over my shoulder every two sec for the re-run police but it looked amazing on you, so worth it.
Sorry so long

I'm usually a fan...I love your wrtiting style - as if you're writing a chatty note and letting us in on a secret...but somehow, yesterday's post left me...disillusioned...

And it has nothing to do with the Ambi review...I usually like reading 'readers comments/recommendations' to get a balanced view on how good a product is....

...The reason I was upset was because you bought a dress to wear to an event from Saks, that you viewed as a 'rental'...and planned to return - even though there was obviously nothing wrong with the dress - it was good enough to host an event in!

That is not just tacky (as you put it) that is unclassy and dishonest...Saks is not a dress-rental company - they will now have to sell that soiled, worn dress on to someone else, or cut their losses on it...

Everyone returns outfits to stores - but usually because the clothes don't fit, or isn't right for them...but to purchase something 'fabulous' with the intention of just wearing and returning it...that is not 'keeping it real'...it is being a poor role model for the people who read this site and look up to you.

My mother always says "cut your coat according to your cloth"...if you are not a millionare (as you replied)..then don't try to dress like one...you are obviously a very pretty girl, and anything you wear and are pictured in, usually does look good on you...

I was so disillusioned last night, I was going to remove this blog from my favourites...but I'm curious to see how you respond, as until last night, you were one of my favourite bloggers :-(

Disappointed Ella

Anonymous Anonymous said...

To clarify my point:

"if you are not a millionare (as you replied)..then don't try to dress like one"....I don't mean you shouldn't try to look your fiercest...just do it honestly, otherwise it is bad karma...

For example...if there was a creme de la mer lipstick you'd look beautiful in, but you couldn't afford it, then instead of buying it, using it for the event and returning it by pretending that the lipstick doesn't suit you - it would be better karma to find a similar colour by clinique - buy it, wear it and keep it...

Hope that makes things clearer - Ella

"Tia returned a dress she wore; I'm never reading her blog again." With fans like these, who needs enemies? If something like that makes you stop reading, it's definitely your right. However, I don't see how disagreeing with someone's action somehow calls for rudeness or hateful comments. Honestly, what's the point in rejoicing in "stinging" Tia? She's not some Perez Hilton who makes a living out of being mean or rude. The blog is positive -- disagree with her (as some have done with civility), fine. But why attack her? Did I read the post wrong? Did she kill someone? Or did she do something we've all done? There could be a wide variety of reasons why she, not being a millionaire, would not want to keep a dress that isn't right for whatever reason. Jeez. If y'all are really going to stop reading and commenting, I certainly won't miss you. I also don't think Tia should explain herself any further in order to keep some judgmental readers from removing Shake Your Beauty from their favorites list.

Hmmm... where to start. First off, Tia I loved your post. :) I love personal posts showing that there is actually a person behind the blog and not some corporate entity.

And the the anon posters who are bashing, let's just say that you really do not realize all the work that goes into blogging. Personally I spend 4-5 hours a day on my blog, 7 days a week. And it is work, but I truly do love it. It makes me excited about the day, and I enjoy hearing from my readers. I don't write for the products and to think that a beauty blogger would soley start a blog for products is beyond idiotic.

Oh and quite frequently, I will adore a mascara by CoverGirl, but dislike their foundation. Does that mean I'm going back on my word? *No*, it simply means that certain products within a brand work differently for me.

Just my two cents. Back to your regularly scheduled Tia-Goodness. :)

In the words of the song - Hi Haters!
If Tia recommends something (whether paid or not - although I do believe it has been clarified that she does not get paid) it is up to the readers to decide to spend their money on it. What works for Tia may or may not work for you, but it is a suggestion - a point in the right direction, if you will.

If she got paid so much for blogging, do you think she'd be taxing herself with deadlines and migraines writing novels? Tia is one hardworking chica!

BTW, I guess I'm hypocritical for loving Philosophy's Amazing Grace set, but hating their moisturizer Hope In a Jar...see how you can hold 1 opinion about a product, but not love everything in the brand?
But some people are so anxious to bring negativity they trip over their own inane logic.
And altogether now - BYE HATERS!!

OMG haha, you just had me rollin laughing when you went from Obama's victory to waxing! :D I'm diging your blog. I wanted to ask if you've heard about Toyota's big party in NYC tonight? I work with them, and I'm excited to share some new webisodes with you called If Looks Could Kill. They follow an aspiring fashion designer, Bianca, who's involved in international espionage by night. If you're familiar with the BMW shorts from a couple of years ago (Guy Ritchie, Madonna), these webisodes definitely have a similar production level.

Link: http://www.iflookscouldkill.com

Interactive: Toyota has gone one step further, the viewer can interact with Bianca to help her unravel the mystery that has suddenly become her life. I really enjoy the multiple levels; it adds a dimension of reality to the story and builds a unique relationship between the main character and viewer.

Launch party: We have our official launch party tonight (6/11) @ Eyebeam in NYC— with performances by Ashanti, Janelle Monae and Anthony Hamilton. Tyra Banks is also on the guest list!

I'd really love your take on the first episode—Haute Pursuit—and discuss more as the other episodes roll-out. Myself, I'm still trying to figure out who the bad guy is—the ex, the boyfriend, the boss? Or maybe it's Nana? lol

Again, would love your take because bloggers like yourself definitely have a good eye about what's cool, hot and current. I would have contacted you via email but I didn't know which the best way to reach you was. I hope I didn't overstep my bounds by directly contacting you.

But please don't return that dress --

1 - IT LOOKS GREAT ON YOU!! You'll be able to get so much more wear out of it that it will eventually pay for itself (amortize baby, amortize!)

2 -- It's not cool that some unsuspecting chick is going to walk into Saks and buy your used dress for full price. If you must, I'd sell it on eBay to recoup some of the cost. Just posting pics of yourself looking all stunning in it would undoubtedly draw many bidders.

So when I initially saw the number of comments on this post a couple days ago, I assumed it was because other people had tried the Ambi Product, tried it, loved it, and came back to talk about just how "awesome" it was (I myself use Ambi's Daily face moisturizer with SPF 30).

But theeeeen I come back to the blog today, and see the line about Shake your Beauty's very own "gossip girls" directed to your commenters, and me being the nosy editor/writer I am, head over here, and wow..is all I can say. I've been coming here for a couple months and have never commented, but this truly warranted a response from a fellow media gal.

First, I'm an editor for a magazine, so I feel the need to clarify as well... Yes we do receive free products, BUT again that does not mean that we're indebited to the company, and we MUST give said product rave reviews. Why? Because we are well aware of the fact that PR people have an automatic list/mailer what have you of media outlets, personalities etc, that the products are generated too. Yes, sometimes a pitch is specialized just for you, but for the most part you're one in a loooong line of media outlets that they've already commissioned to give a review. So in other words, it's up to YOU if you decide to review, or not review, or rave about or bash. Chances are they're looking for numbers...in that the more people that write about..the more consumer will go out and buy it..not necessarily, where those number are coming from...(but i'm sure they are looking for that "amazing" review from Tia Williams ;-))

Secondly, I've never worn a dress and returned it, simply because I'm paranoid and I envision alarms going off as soon as I step into the store lol BUT if I wasn't such a punk, I probably would have returned the dress myself. There are plenty of industry events that are frequented by the same people, and at times it is sort of like high school..."Didn't she have that on last summer at the _____ event." How can they possibly remember what you had on last summer, because they LOVED it, and they only wished it could look AS GOOD on them as it did on you. I'm not implying that, this would be the reason for why Tia is returning the dress, just simply stating why I would return a dress that I've worn only once. People forget that yes we're in media, but we're "regular/everyday" people too...with bills, school loans, rent/mortages etc. To put it simple, if we don't got it, we don't got it. It'smple as that. And Kudos to you Tia for being real, and not caring about what someone would think.

I love your site, because I'm a beauty fiend myself, so keep doing you, brush/dust them off, and keep looking fab while doing it ;-)

I really think some of you guys, even the "I still love you, Tia, despite this terrible, terrible, terrible mistake you're making" folks (bless your hearts), are really being unbearably sanctimonious and holier than thou. I'm guilty of it sometimes, and I am pretty good at recognizing the affliction in others. Taking a deep breath, trying hard to gain some perspective, and, in this case, recognizing that Tia said there's more to the story, often helps. I get that you guys are super-honest, always-on-the-up-and-up, never-doing-anything-wrong, perpetually-in-the-right saints, but you can't possibly hold us regular folks to such high standards. Sometimes when you weigh keeping something that doesn't work for you and returning something, returning it wins. Simple as that. Do you think Tia's walking around wearing everything she buys and then returning it? I STRONGLY doubt it. As someone who used to be a salesperson at a high-end department store, I will say that there are all kinds of things returned on the daily. A dress that's worn for a few hours was the least of our worries. It was normal. Honestly, someone doesn't have to buy a dress and return it after wearing it for it to get dirty. I have some dressing room stories that would make you all want to buy your clothes off the internet! I wish Tia hadn't even mentioned this, but mainly because I wish that she hadn't given the vultures waiting in the wings a reason to pounce. While some of you seem to want to burn Tia at the stake over this ridiculousness, I just want to give her a hug. But I guess that means I'm not as perfect and saintly as some of you. Maybe one day.

You look absolutely stunning! Both your skin and complexion are flawless! Going to give my self a mini-facial as we speak!

Its quite unfortunate that so many have found this blog as a place to release such negative energy:\ However its things like that that should let you know how absolutely fabulous you are, if you weren't no one would pay any attention now would they?

Have a wonderful rest of the week!

WOW. This used to be a fave blog, but I am absolutely STUNNED that a grown, respectable woman, who has the power to reach & influence SO many young girls & women would actually CONDONE wearing a dress & returning it?!?! That is absolutely insane.

If you can't afford to buy it, then you shouldn't be wearing it, but that is just my HUMBLE opinion.

I honestly thought that the only people who did this were "ghetto" people whose mama didn't raise them right!!! but now I'm not so sure. . .

If so called respected, "beauty authorities" act in such a dishonest way, what is our world coming to?!

& whoever commented about saving the receipts so she can return her books when her nieces are done reading them, was ON POINT!!!

I know you can do whatever you want Ms. Williams, but think about how many people you reach. . . sending out the message that it's perfectly ok to buy things, use them, & then return them, just doesn't seem positive or honest.

But thanks for posting this so we can see more of what your true character is. . .

Tia, let me first say that I LOVE your writing! I check my google reader almost daily for new posts and I have read all of the books you've written....(I am anxiously awaiting another IT Chicks ;-0)

Now...let's address this completely unfabulous ugliness that some feel the need to spread around anonymously in cyberworld.

"And I got a saucy little cocktail dress (12th Street by Cynthia Vincent, and it's going back to Saks tomorrow)"

From this statement Tia never once clarified if she purchased a dress, received a dress (free of charge) just to wear for this event, was sought out to endorse a designers line or if it was handed to her from a fashion saavy bum off the street. It pains me that people are so quick to pass judgement and get, dare I say, faaar too worked up over something that they only have 10% of the details on. Now I believe Ms. Tia said that further details would be coming in another post about the now infamous dress. How about those debbie downers out there wait patiently to hear from the only one person that can share full details of this ordeal and then cast judgement (if you really still feel that it needed).

Meanwhile, those of us who are true fans and take this blog for what it is...a seasoned vet's knowledgeful PERSONAL opinion, will continue to do what we've been doing all along...supporting a fabulous beauty blog.

Sorry to take up so much space...but the ugliness made me do it ;-)

Her blog is already written in such a girlfried-to-girlfriend conversational tone that I assumed she was joking about returning the dress. Even if she wasn't though..so what!

Enough is enough....we've heard all sides of the story so for the first time in SYB history, we are shutting down the comments for this post!

I guess people will complain and liken us to the ruling military junta of Myanmar for censoring public opinion but it's explicitly obvious that they already missed the point!
